Hot Work Tool Steel

Hot Work Tool Steels are used for applications requiring strength, wear resistance and toughness at elevated temperatures. The ability to withstand thermal cycling or heart check resistance is also required.

Applications include

  • Forging
  • Extrusion
  • Hot Upsetting
  • Piercing
  • Any operations involving deformation of solid hot metal at relatively high temperatures.

Temperature ranges

  • Temperatures range between 600 – 2000 F (and higher for forgings).
  • Tools and dies will typically be required to run at temperatures of 800-1200 F and be able to withstand thermal cycling.

Choosing the right Hot Work Tool Steel is based on the conditions of the forming process.

  • Up to 1000 F – Any Hot Work tool steel
  • 1100 – 1300 F – Non-Ferrous high temperature alloys may be required.
